tv says “no fat chicks”

Please view the following 2 commercials:

Now, I love Victoria’s Secret. I love their lingerie, love their commercials, love them. But according to cable TV, while it’s alright to show to barely covered fashion models prancing around in commercials and in a full blown lingerie fashion show once a year, the Lane Bryant commercial is too sexual to show during “Dancing with the Stars”.

I’ll agree that the Lane Bryant commercial is very sexy, but too sexual?? It’s playful, flirty, and above all it’s showing a woman who is much more realistic in terms of body type than any of our gazelle-like, high cheek boned model sisters who are signed with Ford. Watch this commercial from Christmas 2010 directed by Michael Bay:

It was aired during the VS fashion show. I’ve watched it a few times and so far can spot numerous barely clad fashion models wandering around in stilettos; a model in lingerie bent over a pool table; a model in lingerie tied up (for real, bondage on cable TV); a door opening to a bedroom with two women in it (I don’t think they were having afternoon tea); another scene with a model rolling in bed; other models stripping; and of course the whole fact that the entire plot of the commercial is based on a thousand fantasies – sexual fantasies!

And don’t get me wrong, I love the commercial. I think it’s well done and I love the VS Angels. What I don’t love is that these woman are openly worshiped but a sexy, fun commercial featuring a plus sized woman is deemed “too sexual” to show during a TV show featuring scantily clad “celebrities” gyrating on stage. Get real people.

I think it is also important to consider that while, yes, the woman in the Lane Bryant commercial is “plus size” she is still a smooth, flat stomached, edited, plus size and the commercial focus’s more on her (large especially compared to victoria’s secret models) breasts than any other part of her. To me that focus is taking away the plus size or more normal sized part of the model and turning it into a large breasted model first and foremost, I don’t think that was an accident. I think the commercial is probably trying to send a message somewhat akin to “its okay if you’re fat! You have huge tits and that’s what matters!!!!!”

Oh well, advertising is almost never feminist, why I would expect any different of a plus size brand I do not know

yes, that she is. plus size models are still held to extremely strict standards similar to their ‘mainstream’ counterparts. Were they trying to play up the large breasts? Maybe, I don’t know how to downplay breasts when dealing with lingerie though.

Flat stomach or not I still think she’s more realistic in her curves than any fashion model.
